Buyer Beware!
We are in a transition period at the moment, Microsofts Windows 10 support finishes at the end of October 2025. After that date, very few if any updates will be coming through and you will need to be on at least Windows 11.
Here may lie a problem, if you are looking for your first, or a replacement PC for gaming or any use for that matter.
Microsoft in their infinite wisdom require the piece of hardware known as a Trusted Platform Module 2 or TPM 2.
This is required for windows 11 to install. Without this it won’t. Now, this is where you must be careful!
There are a lot of machines that are old spec, being sold these days on various websites and platforms that shouldn’t come with windows 11 but do!
The Pitfalls of buying refurbished pcs can be avoided by looking for the following :-
If the machine you’re looking at has a cpu (processor) that is a lower generation than Intel 8th Gen, you will know this as the process or model will be Intel I3, I5, I7, I9 with the number after it beginning with 8XXX.
Anything less than Intels 8th gen (8xxx) or Ryzen 3 series, should not have Win 11 installed, and would therefore possibly, not be legal, or run as they should!
With regard to AMD Ryzen the number should be R3, R5, R7, R9 3xxx and upwards, there are some 2nd Gen ie 2XXX that will take Windows 11 but, to be safe Ryzen 3rd Gen upwards is a safer bet.
So as we get closer, to the cut off date, be careful. There are a lot of great deals out there for refurbished machines with old hardware, good warranties etc.
However, If you want some value for money, and longevity, make sure the machine is supported using the processors as mentioned above.
