If it runs out of storage halfway through a project, struggles with 4K playback or takes all night to export a client film, the saving soon disappears. The best PC for video editing is the one balanced around the footage you use, the software you rely on and the turnaround your work demands.

For some creators, that means a sensible 1080p editing system with room to grow. For others, it means a workstation-class build designed to handle multi-camera 4K timelines, demanding colour work and regular exports. The key is spending where it makes a measurable difference, rather than paying for parts your workflow will not use.

What makes the best PC for video editing?

Video editing puts pressure on several PC components at once. Your processor handles timeline calculations, effects, encoding and exporting. Your graphics card accelerates supported effects and playback. RAM keeps projects, media and applications available without constant slowdowns, while fast storage prevents footage from becoming a bottleneck.

That is why an editing PC should be treated as a complete system, not a processor with a few components added around it. A fast CPU paired with too little memory or a small, slow drive will still leave you waiting. Likewise, an expensive graphics card is not always the right first upgrade if your work is mostly straightforward cuts and exports.

Your editing software also matters. Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, VEGAS Pro and similar applications use hardware differently. Resolve, for example, can make particularly good use of GPU power for colour grading and effects, while CPU performance and codec support remain crucial for export work. If you regularly move between Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop and audio software, memory capacity becomes more valuable still.

Proxies can reduce the pressure on any system, but a well-specified PC means you need them less often and can work more comfortably when deadlines are tight.

Choose the processor for editing and exporting

For most video editors, the processor is the starting point. Look for a modern AMD Ryzen or Intel Core processor with strong multi-core performance. More cores generally help with rendering and exporting, but clock speed still matters for responsive editing, programme launches and tasks that do not spread neatly across every core.

Graphics cards: when more GPU power pays off

A dedicated graphics card is strongly recommended for serious video editing. It helps accelerate playback, scaling, transitions, colour tools and effects where your chosen application supports GPU acceleration. It is particularly valuable for DaVinci Resolve users, 4K workflows and editors working with noise reduction, compositing or GPU-heavy effects.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards are popular for creative work because of broad software support, CUDA acceleration in many applications and useful hardware encoding features. AMD Radeon cards can also offer strong editing performance and may suit particular budgets or software requirements. The best choice is the one that works well with the applications and effects you use every week.

Video memory matters as much as the card’s general performance. For straightforward 1080p editing, 8GB of VRAM can be sufficient. For 4K projects, 10GB to 12GB gives more breathing room, especially with colour grading, high-resolution assets or multiple displays. Heavier 6K, 8K and compositing work can justify more VRAM, but it is an investment best made for a genuine need rather than a future possibility.

RAM and storage prevent the everyday frustrations

Memory is one of the easiest places to under-specify a creative PC. While 16GB can run editing software, it is a modest starting point rather than a comfortable target. For regular 1080p editing, 32GB is a sensible minimum. For 4K work, 64GB is often the better choice, particularly if you leave browser tabs, graphics software and other applications open alongside your editor.

More RAM does not automatically make every export faster, but it reduces the need for the system to use slower storage as temporary memory. That keeps your workflow more responsive when projects become busy.

Storage needs planning too. A single large drive may sound convenient, but separating your operating system, active projects and archive media can improve both organisation and performance. An NVMe SSD is ideal for Windows, applications, cache files and current project footage. A second SSD gives active edits their own fast workspace, while a larger hard drive or external backup system can store completed work and source media.

Capacity disappears quickly with video. A 1TB drive is a practical starting point, but editors working with 4K footage should seriously consider 2TB or more of fast internal storage. Leave free space for cache, previews and exports. A nearly full SSD is not a happy editing drive.

  • Professional 4K and multicam work: A Ryzen 9 or Intel Core i9-class processor, 64GB RAM, a stronger dedicated GPU and separate high-speed drives for projects, cache and operating system. Designed for frequent client work, longer timelines and faster delivery.

  • High-resolution, VFX or heavy grading: High-end multi-core CPU performance, 64GB to 128GB RAM, a GPU with generous VRAM and carefully planned fast storage. This is where the demands of your exact software and footage should guide every component choice.

These are not fixed rules. A 4K editor using proxies and simple cuts may be perfectly happy with the second option, while a 1080p project packed with effects can benefit from a more powerful graphics card.

Do not overlook cooling, connectivity and displays

Long exports keep a PC working hard. Good cooling helps the processor and graphics card maintain performance rather than reducing speed as temperatures rise. A quality power supply is equally important for reliability, especially in systems with higher-end graphics cards. Neither is the glamorous part of a build, but both protect the performance you are paying for.

Think about your ports before ordering. Fast USB connections are useful for external SSDs, card readers and backup drives. Wi-Fi may be convenient, but wired Ethernet is usually the better option for moving large files across a home or business network. If you edit from camera cards often, a reliable card reader can save repeated frustration.

Your monitor affects the final result as well. A colour-accurate display is more useful than simply chasing the highest refresh rate. Resolution, panel quality, calibration and enough screen space for your timeline all make a difference when you are grading footage or checking detail.
